EDMONTON – Canadian wrestlers Taylor McPherson and Katie Mulkay were crowned champions of season 10 of Amazing Race Canada. The show’s finale aired on September 10 and saw McPherson and Mulkay complete the final stage of the competition ahead of the other three teams remaining in the running. The race ended in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium. For winning this race, the duo will receive a vehicle, a trip around the world and $250,000 in cash.
These two best friends are both from Alberta (McPherson is from Calgary and Mulkay is from Edmonton) and are members of the Edmonton Wrestling Club. They have represented Canada in wrestling at events such as the World Championships, the Pan American Championships and the Jeux de la Francophonie.
After the finale aired, Mulkay and McPherson spoke to WCL about their experience and how their wrestling backgrounds helped them along their journey.
” Earn The Amazing Race Canada was an exhilarating and unforgettable experience. The entire course was intense, requiring not only physical strength, but mental strength as well,” said Mulkay, who continued: “The competition tested our limits in ways we had not anticipated, and having wrestling experience played a crucial role in our success. Physically, wrestling had already prepared us to take on long, grueling challenges and push ourselves to the point of exhaustion. But beyond that, wrestling taught us invaluable lessons in strategy, discipline and teamwork.”
McPherson also spoke about how the mental side of the sport helped them cope with the challenges of racing. “On a mental level, wrestling instilled in us the importance of staying focused and adapting to pressure. The strategic thinking required in wrestling, such as analyzing opponents, making quick decisions, and resisting, applies directly to managing unpredictable challenges. As the season progressed, our wrestling experience helped us stay calm and manage our stress, giving us a leg up on our competitors.”
Mulkay credited many skills learned in wrestling as a significant part of their victory: “This victory is a testament to the fact that wrestling will always be a part of our lives and has allowed us to become the women we are today. It reinforced that the resilience and skills we developed on the mat were essential to our success in this competition.”
If Mulkay and McPherson are the winners of the show today The Amazing Racethey have clearly not forgotten the sport that helped them build their skills. “We are incredibly grateful to have been recognized as “The Wrestlers” at The Amazing Race Canada. It was a privilege to represent our sport and show Canadians that it is beautiful to be strong,” added Ms. McPherson.
