Less than 24 hours after being defeated by unanimous decision in his high-profile fight against Jake Paul, Mike Tyson offered his thanks on Saturday via the platform Xsuggesting in the process that he may have entered the arena for one last time.
The 58-year-old pugilist said he was grateful to have been able to step into the ring again, after serious health problems that occurred last June.
“It’s one of those situations where you lose, but you come out a winner nonetheless. I am grateful that I was able to experience last night. No regrets about getting back into that ring one last time. I almost went there in June. I had to have 8 blood transfusions. I lost half of my blood and 25 lbs in the hospital, and I had to work hard to get healthy and compete in this fight, so I won,” he insisted.
Tyson had to postpone the fight, initially scheduled for July 20, after receiving medical treatment on May 26 on board a plane due to an ulcer, he simply explained.
“To have my kids near me watching me fight punch for punch for 8 rounds with a talented boxer half my age, all in front of a packed (AT&T Stadium in Arlington) is a experience that no man could have even asked for. Thank you,” he continued.
Paul quickly responded to Tyson’s post: “I love you Mike. It was an honor. You are an inspiration to us all,” he wrote.
Tyson (50-7, 44 KOs) entered the match with his intentions on the attack, but was shaken by three consecutive left hooks from Paul early in the third round and appeared lack of energy afterwards.
Once the youngest heavyweight champion at the age of 20 in 1986, he had not stepped into the ring in a sanctioned fight since losing to Kevin McBride in June 2005.
Friday’s fight was played in Texas in the Dallas Cowboys’ den in front of 72,300 spectators and with more than 60 million households connected, the broadcaster said on Saturday Netflix.
