Englishman Galal Yafai stopped his compatriot Sunny Edwards in a flyweight contest in Manchester.

Galal Yafai (9-0-0, 7 KO’s) avenged by technical knockout the setback he suffered in 2015 against Sunny Edwards (21-2-0, 4 KO’s) in the amateur ranks to secure the vacancy interim flyweight title in the World Boxing Council (WBC) version this Saturday at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England

The definition of the fight came at 1:10 minutes of the sixth round when the referee stopped the actions due to Yafai’s barrage of blows without response from the former world champion.

Edwards had won a split decision over Yafai when they were amateurs in April 2015, but a year later, Yafai was selected to participate in the Olympics from Río de Janeiro, Brazil.

That decision irritated Edwards, who had promised to repeat Yafai’s dose and get back in some way against Robert McCracken, the British team’s performance director and also Yafai’s coach, whom Edwards blamed for his non-participation in the Olympics.

This time Yafai, who was crowned olympic champion at Tokyo 2020, he took the initiative from the opening bell. His long combinations made Edwards retreat, who gave the impression that he did not have enough stamina to counteract the gale.

That’s how it was, Yafai never took his foot off the accelerator and undermined Edwards’ resistance, who at the end of the fight recognized his opponent’s superiority and indicated that he would hang up his gloves.

“I was worried coming into camp because of how good Sunny is and I trained like crazy,” Yafai said.

“I’ve fought Cubans and Kazakhs as an amateur, so I was used to that style like Sunny, who is a technical boxer, he’s number one in the division. We had great sparring in the past (as amateurs and professionals), but “The fights are different. Beating Sunny tonight was a better feeling than being on the podium (after winning Olympic gold in 2021),” explained the interim monarch.

For his part, Edwards was clear in announcing his retirement. “Win, lose or draw, I was retiring tonight, I don’t have the same energy for sport.”

“I put so much energy into my first six or seven years that I need a break. 12 months ago, Sunny Edwards would have fought more than six rounds. For the first time in my life I’ve been thinking about things outside of boxing. When you no longer have the fire in you the stomach, the evidence is in the ring,” he said.
