Japan is indeed the most dominant country in the wrestling events at the Paris Olympics. Already at the top of the medal rankings in the discipline before the last day of the Games, the country of the Rising Sun won two new gold medals this Sunday, at the Arena Champ de Mars.

In the women’s -76 kg category, Yuka Kagami dominated the American Kennedy Blades to become Olympic champion at just 22 years old. His title confirms the rise of a new generation of Japanese wrestlers, also embodied by Kotaro Kiyooka (23), crowned this Sunday in the men’s -65 kg category by dominating the Iranian Rahman Amouzadkhalili. Their coronations bring the total of Japanese gold medals in wrestling to 8 in Paris, far ahead of the other nations.

8/18

The number of gold medals won by Japan in wrestling (freestyle and Greco-Roman) at the 2024 Olympics. No country has been so dominant since the Soviet Union in 1988 (8 titles out of 20 events).

Albania writes its history

Still in the men’s -65 kg, one of the two bronze medals went to Albanian Islam Dudaev. Reigning European champion, the one who fought for Russia until 2022 offered Albania the second medal in its history at the Olympic Games, beating the Hungarian world champion Iszmail Muszukajev. Wrestling is definitely a provider of medals for the Balkan country, which obtained its first medal on Saturday, already thanks to a naturalized Russian athlete.

The last wrestling gold medal of the Paris Olympics was obtained by the Bahraini Akhmed Tazhudinov, who dominated the Georgian Givi Matcharashvili by fall after only 1’30 of combat.
