Mijain Lopez entered the legend of the Olympic Games this summer in Paris by winning a fifth title in a row in Greco-Roman wrestling, a performance that no one had achieved before him, in all disciplines combined. And it was like a true rock star that the 41-year-old wrestler made his return to his country, Cuba. On the night of Monday to Tuesday, tens of thousands of Cubans took to the streets of Havana and its famous Malecon avenue to celebrate the return of its athletes, and in particular of its five-time Olympic champion, who retired at the outcome of the Paris Olympics.
Mijain Lopez was greeted as soon as he got off the plane by his mother, whom he hugged for a long time, and by President Miguel Díaz-Canel. “We are happy to arrive here, happy for the welcome, since we got off the plane it has been something incredible”he declared after climbing with his two children on a stage in the Piragua, a park located along the Malecon, where a jubilant crowd awaited him.
