Monday, in Pennsylvania, brothers John and Matthew Gaudreau were laid to rest in front of families and friends gathered for the occasion a week and a half after their tragic deaths.
The two brothers lost their lives when they were hit by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes in New Jersey on August 29.
That same evening, at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, WWE presented its weekly edition of Raw live in front of Alberta fans and a tribute to “Johnny Hockey” was inevitable as he was a very popular color bearer for the Calgary Flames for nine seasons.
It was the popular Quebec wrestler Sami Zayn who wore the deceased’s #13 jersey during a segment involving another very popular figure in Calgary: Bret “The Hitman” Hart.
The mere presence of Gaudreau’s jersey launched the crowd into a long cheer while the name Johnny resonated inside the Saddledome for long moments.
WWE also invited journalist Jackie Redmon during its broadcast to explain Gaudreau’s life and career in addition to his impact on the Calgary community.
It was an opportunity to see, on screen, the hundreds of jerseys and items left by fans in honor of Gaudreau and his family.
As for the Flames this season, they will play their first home game on October 12 against the Philadelphia Flyers. We bet that other tributes will be on the program.
